Sitting just a stone’s throw from one of the best, most rippable left-hand waves on the planet, Macaronis Surf Resort has the task of offering an experience and accommodations worthy of its namesake
Macaronis (the wave) needs no introduction or description to most surfers, but it’s fun to talk about so here we go… It’s located in the famed Mentawai Islands of Indonesia and described by many as being the most high-performance wave in existence. It’s often compared to a skatepark that offers barrel sections anywhere from 5-15 seconds long. It breaks consistently from March to November and works through most tides and even onshore winds. The wave starts getting hollower, steeper, and scarier once it gets above 4 feet, but anything below that can be surfed by intermediate surfers and above. It’s often said that if you wanted to design the perfect wave pool, the contours of the reef at Macaronis would be the blueprint for doing so.
Macaronis Surf Resort sits on a stunning clear-water lagoon just around the bend from the legendary left. While Macaronis the wave gets a lion’s share of the attention, there are plenty of other breaks on offer in the area. Macaroni Surf Resort also offers transportation to breaks including Greenbush, Silabu Left, Macaronis Right, and Mini Macas.
While the region is generally known as a place for advanced and expert surfers, Macaronis Surf Resort has packages and options for all levels of surfers from beginners on up. There are a handful of gentle, sand-bottom waves where lessons and coaching take place. Surf tours to the different waves are provided by the resort’s fleet of eight different boats
Boats are available on-demand for surfing from morning to night, however, there’s plenty of other activities available beyond that. Macaronis Surf Resort also offers fishing, yoga, snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and more. You can also set out on tours to explore nearby islands and villages. Packages include free use of SUP’s, kayaks, snorkels, and fishing & spear equipment.
Accommodations offered are 16 twin-share suites or four new family-sized suites that sleep up to four people each. The resort is all-inclusive and offers a Continental Breakfast buffet or hot made-to-order breakfast, plated lunch, and either a three-course or buffet dinner. A live surf cam feed of Macaronis wave is usually running on the flat screen TV in the bar & restaurant area until dark so you can always keep an eye on what’s happening. The resort also touts a new and improved internet connection that was installed in 2019.
Kids under six are free at Macaronis Surf Resort; non-surfers are 50% off. Flights should be made into Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport and airport transfers can be arranged with the resort for a fee.
SPECIAL: Macaronis Surf Resort is currently offering 50% Off for rooms that have been vacated due to other guests being forced to reschedule from 2021 to 2022. Contact the resort for more details.
