As the only surf resort on the island of Simakakang in the Mentawais, Aloita offers a level of tranquility and seclusion that’s hard to match. This family-friendly, Bohemian resort is also centrally located to many of the best breaks in the famed island chain, providing ample opportunities to score the waves of a lifetime.
The resort is all-inclusive and consists of 10 beachfront villas and bungalows that look out to the white sand and crystal clear water that surrounds Simakakang. Accommodations can fit anywhere from 1 to 8 people and include wi-fi, air conditioning, hot water, beach chairs, a minibar, and daily cleaning. Children 0-5 years old are also free.
The number of world-class waves within a relatively small area is a major part of what makes the Mentawais such a popular surf destination. Aloita Resort considers the wave Tikus to be its home break, which is a classic left-hander that offers surf nearly every day of the year. Aloita has its own private dock and a fleet of two boats that can take you around to surf any of the other Mentawais classics, including Telescopes, Suicides, Seven Palms, Icelands, and Hookers. Aloita offers rentals of high-performance surfboards for those who want to leave their own boards at home.
While the Mentawais are famous for their high-performance, expert-level assortment of waves, it’s also a great place to learn or improve on your surfing. Aloita Resort has its own surf school with certified instructors that can help surfers of any skill level or experience. This includes out-of-water lessons and in-water lessons and coaching. Private lessons are available and soft top surfboards and rash guards are provided by the resort.
The meals provided as part of their all-inclusive packages are based around seafood sourced from local fisherman and fruits and vegetables grown on the island, some of which is grown right there on the resort. The menu is prepared by international chefs who have passed through Aloita Resort or are staying there at the time of your visit. Vegan and vegetarian meal plans are available upon request.
Aloita Resort has a private beachfront with a coastline that offers beautiful coral reef for snorkeling and free-diving. Stand-up paddleboards, snorkeling gear, and kayaks are available to guests free of charge. The beach is lined with hammocks and gazebos, allowing for fun, relaxing days when not out chasing surf. The resort has a yoga hut with complimentary yoga classes each morning. Within the resort, you can find a cocktail bar, ping pong table, pool table, and a TV room.
May through September is peak surf season in the Mentawais and the time of the year when the surf is biggest. However, with the Mentawais being a chain of islands surf can generally be found year-round. October through April may be a better time to visit Aloita Resort for beginner and intermediate surfers.
To get to Aloita Resort, flights should be made to Minangkabau International Airport. From there, you take a ferry to Tua Pejat, which is the Mentawai capital, after which a transfer is available via speedboat through the resort.
