Where

Southern Nicaragua gets most of the attention, but there are plenty of waves to be had in the northern part of the country, especially if you know where to look. Among the handful of surf resorts located in northern Nicaragua is Puerto Sandino Surf Resort.

Puerto Sandino Surf Resort is located oceanfront in the town of Miramar, which is 40 minutes from Leon and just a few miles down the road from the town and port of Puerto Sandino. There’s also a world-class left by the same name that’s only accessible by boat. Puerto Sandino (the wave) has a variety of sections for intermediate to advanced surfers, though when the swell is overhead high it’s generally best for advanced surfers and above.

Directly in front of the resort on Miramar are several different peaks to choose from, all of which can produce fun waves for surfers of all levels. The resort also offers 4×4 access to other waves in the area.

Rooms can be booked as either private or shared. They offer a variety of packages ranging from a single-night stay to all-inclusive. They also offer a Dream Tour Package which is personally guided by the owner of the resort who picks you up at the airport in Managua and guides your trip from beginning to end.

They also offer a Learn to Surf package for beginner surfers. This is an intensive week-long package that includes surfboard rental, a photo session, and water safety instruction.

The main beach house is a community area that features A/C, a swimming pool, a place to watch movies, a stereo system, a library of books and surf magazines, a putting green, board games, and a fridge stocked with ice-cold beer, soda, & water.

There are waves year-round in Nicaragua, however, the larger swells come from the south between March and October. November through April is considered dry season there, with rains beginning again in May, October and November have the potential to be rainy all month long so keep that in mind when planning your trip.
