The private 1,500-acre peninsula of Punta Mita has developed a reputation as a luxurious, safe, and beautiful travel destination in the Mexican state of Nayarit. Located south of the popular surf destination of Sayulita and north of Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita is uniquely positioned to receive a variety of swell directions, also making it a hotspot in the Mexico surf scene.

One of the luxury surf resorts in Punta Mita is the Hotel Cinco, which is located on the beach at El Anclote. The resort offers two- and three-bedroom suites that include kitchens, wi-fi, air conditioning, flat-screen satellite TVs, and all of the amenities you would expect from a luxury resort. Most have ocean-view terraces and all are beautifully furnished.

The surf in this part of Punta Mita is on the smaller side; ideal for longboarders and novice or beginner surfers. This makes it an ideal location for families or those looking for ample opportunities to work on and improve their surfing skills in a breathtaking location. There are, however, plenty of high-performance, advanced breaks within short treks of the resort. Some of the more popular waves include Stinky’s, Palmitas, Lighthouse, Burros, and La Lancha. Being on a peninsula, Punta Mita and the surrounding area are able to catch swell from multiple directions. Peak seasons for south swells are April to October, with north swells from December to March. The water is warm, as is the air, so use plenty of sunscreen but not much in the way of wetsuits or spring suits.

Hotel Cinco also specializes in stand-up paddleboarding, and the waves out in front of the resort are perfect for it. Board rentals, gear, lessons, tours, and everything else needed for your water and beach adventures can be arranged through Cinco AquaCenter Concierge. Boat trips may be the ideal way to go for surfers looking for something a bit more challenging and specific.

Punta Mita has a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, bars, and taco shops to choose from. Restaurant Row is near to Hotel Cinco and has just about anything you could want. Many restaurants feature locally sourced fresh seafood and fruits and vegetables in their menus, allowing you to get a true taste of Mexico. Hotel Cinco’s rooftop La Azotea offers its own breakfast and lunch options.

Non-surfing activity options are plentiful, including whale watching, hiking, and biking, fishing charters, yoga, scuba diving at Marieta Islands Marine Reserve, canopy tours, and bird watching. Hotel Cinco also is set up to host yoga retreats, business retreats, weddings, family reunions or other large themed gatherings.

To get to Hotel Cinco and Punta Mita, you will generally fly into Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport in Puerto Vallarta. From there it’s just a short drive that will usually take less than an hour.
