The collection of islands and atolls that make up the Maldives offers up some of the most idyllic and dreamy surf spots on the planet. Kandooma is one of the islands in the South Male Atoll and serves as home to the Kandooma Resort by Holiday Inn. Though the South Male Atoll doesn’t have the same quantity and consistency of waves found in the North Male Atoll, there are still a wide variety of incredible waves to be had.
One of these waves is Kandooma Right, and it sits just a few steps down the sand in front of the resort. In fact, Kandooma Resort has exclusive access to this wave, meaning that if you book a stay there, the only other people you’ll share the wave with are others staying at the resort. The wave, which attracts surfers from over the world, is a fun, hollow right and is one of the best breaks in the Maldives.
There are a handful of other waves either within a short paddle or boat ride from Kandooma. There are waves available for every level of surfer; there are also both lefts and rights on hand. The Maldives primarily receive swell from the south so their surf season runs from March-October, with June through August being the best window.
Surf coaching and lessons for beginners are available in some of the smaller, gentler breaks. All of the surf lessons, coaching, and surf tours are handled by their certified instructors and guides. Photo and video packages are available upon request all year round.
The resort itself is located beachfront in a spectacular setting and offers 160 overwater, beach, or garden villas. The overwater villas are exactly as described and give you a view of the sand and tropical reef just below your window. There are 10 different dining, cafe, and bar options available to choose from at the resort. The island of Kandooma also offers its own selction of dining, bars, and discos.
Kandooma Resort is great for single, couple, or family vacations. It offers the Kandoo Kids Club, which is a supervised zone for children between 4-12. The kids club includes a library, arts & crafts area, gaming zone, splash pad, and more. You can also send the kids off for surf lessons while getting your waves in at Kandooma Right. Kids get to stay, eat, and participate in all of the activities at the resort for free as long as they are staying in the same villas as their parents.
There are a variety of non-surfing activities to choose from. Diving and snorkeling are chief among them as Kandooma and the surrounding area is loaded with tropical reef and plenty of exotic marine life. The island is in close proximity to some of the Maldives ’ best dive sites. Windsurfing, wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, and guided excursions are also available at Kandooma Resort.
Kandooma resort is located 40 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport in Male. There is wi-fi in each villa at the resort. The Maldives has a number of its own rules and regulations for what you can bring there so be sure to look into that before you go.
